Professor Georgina Long AO

Joint 2024 Australian of the Year & leading Australian Medical Oncologist

Joint 2024 Australian of the Year and leading Australian medical oncologist, Professor Georgina Long AO, is a sought-after media commentator, inspiring public speaker and passionate advocate of women working in STEM.

Throughout her trailblazing career, Professor Long has consistently broken barriers and tackled challenges that others have avoided, driving transformative advances in the fight against melanoma both in Australia and worldwide. Fearless and creative, she sets new benchmarks, turning the impossible into possible, while empowering and inspiring others.

Melanoma, Australia’s national cancer, has been a particular focus of her groundbreaking work. Professor Long is ranked as the world’s equal-leading expert in melanoma across all fields and disciplines.

Her ideas-focused change agency has also led to revolutionary approaches in treating other cancers, including glioblastoma and various other malignancies. Her innovative research has redefined what’s possible in cancer treatment. Thanks in part to her efforts, advanced melanoma—once considered a fatal diagnosis—is now, for many patients, a curable disease.

Professor Long serves as the Co-Medical Director of Melanoma Institute Australia, the largest melanoma research and clinical care centre globally. She is also the Chair of Melanoma Medical Oncology and Translational Research at The University of Sydney.
