Neary Ty

Neary Ty is an award winning television journalist and event MC.

She was born in Australia after her parents escaped war torn Cambodia as refugees in the 1980s.

Neary graduated with honours from Deakin University with a Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications) majoring in Journalism.

She joined the 9News Melbourne team after doing work experience in 2011. Neary has worked in various roles including Communications Coordinator where she was responsible for monitoring breaking news incidents and dispatching crews as well as the news helicopter to cover some of the most tragic incidents across the state. She’s also spent time as a News Librarian, Assistant to the Chief Of Staff and Producer working on local and national news bulletins.

She started reporting in the field in 2014 covering major events like bushfires, devastating floods, the Bourke Street tragedy, Harry and Meghan’s royal tour and was in the thick of it during lockdown protests.

She’s been nominated for awards for her coverage of the murder of Melbourne icon – Sisto Malaspina as well as breaking numerous crime stories, counter terror raids and scoops over the years including a truck crash involving football legend Glenn Archer. Neary has also been highly commended by the Melbourne Press Club for shining a spotlight on Victoria’s youth justice system.

In 2024 she was awarded the Crimestoppers Mersina Halvagis Award for her outstanding contribution in the prevention of crime. Neary has always shown sensitivity towards victims and grieving families and was also recognised for her reporting on a number of Crimestoppers campaigns.

In 2022 Neary was inducted into Mentone Girls Grammar Remarkable Women Hall of Fame. Only among a handful of MGGS alumni, Neary was recognised for excellence in the field of media and journalism

Neary is proud to be the first Asian reporter at 9 News Melbourne. She prides herself on authentic storytelling and is passionate about reporting on diversity.

When Neary isn’t reporting, she is hosting events. From galas, to awards nights and dinners. Neary is an exceptional and engaging communicator, who brings warmth, professionalism, and journalistic expertise to any panel discussion or QandA. Neary is energetic, bubbly, and sensitive when it comes to various topics. She is confident and commands the room. Neary has hosted awards night with 1000+guests, she’s also been MC at a number of weddings and a christening, charity lunches/dinners, charity fun runs, and corporate dinners.

Neary has been keynote speaker on a number of occasions speaking to disadvantaged teens about her own journey. Growing in Melbourne and the proud daughter of refugee parents. Neary recently spoke about her journey at Deakin University and her pathway into getting a job at Nine. She’s also spoken to Victoria Police officers about her role as a reporter and the many crime stories she’s covered over the years. Neary also offered media training tips during this session. Neary often speaks about her job and a what a day in the life of a news reporter entails.
