Matt Hill

Matt Hill is one of Australia’s most familiar voices when it comes to Sports Broadcasting as Australia’s premier Horse Racing caller. Whether it be Horse Racing, AFL, or Olympics, Matt senses the occasion and takes the audience along for the ride with his passionate commentary.

Commencing his Broadcasting career in 2000, when he was awarded the John Tapp Scholarship at SKY Racing, Matt quickly established himself and became SKY’s Sydney lead race caller for over five years. His race calling has taken him to tracks all over the world including the UK, Ireland, South Korea, Germany, Czech Republic, Mauritius, Singapore, Malaysia, Sweden, France, and Dubai. His regular trips to the UK have seen Matt call seven Grand Nationals for BBC Radio which included being the lead caller for the great race in 2018.

After legendary race caller, Greg Miles, hung up the binoculars, Matt assumed the role as lead race caller for Racing Victoria and Racing.com in 2017. Now a regular voice for Australia’s richest and most prestigious features, including the Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate, a highlight thus far was Winx’s record breaking fourth Cox Plate win when Matt perfectly summed up the momentous occasion in a tight finish with ‘cometh the hour, cometh the legend, Winx has done it!’. The ability to capture moments such as Winx, resulted in Matt winning the Bert Wolfe Award for Broadcasting Excellence in 2019.

In addition to Horse Racing, Matt has featured on the Radio and TV broadcast across five different Olympics and two Paralympics, which has seen him cover Track and Field, Equestrian, Rowing, Modern Pentathlon, Tennis, Short Track Speed Skating, and Curling. A lifelong highlight was calling Mo Farrah’s famous 5000 metre win at the London Games in 2012.

Other sports which Matt has covered include the Australian Open Tennis in which he has not only been a commentator for Tennis Australia’s world feed, but also as the tournament’s announcer. He has also worked for Fox Sports as a regular host of their International Equestrian Event.

Matt has been a regular commentator of the AFL. Starting at the ABC in 2015, he called for several years before taking a short break as his racing commitments increased, to then return to the game in 2021 as a special guest caller of SEN’s AFL Nation team.
