Ex Australian Netball Captain
One of Australia’s greatest ever netball players, Anne Sargeant retired from the game in 1988 leaving behind a record which will almost certainly never be matched.
Anne Sargeant represented Australian Netball for over a decade from 1978 to 1988, captaining the Australian Netball Team for six years.
Since retiring in 1988, Anne Sargeant has continued to channel her talents into sport and the media as a speaker, motivator, author, radio and television commentator and corporate presenter.
An accomplished presenter, in 1992 Anne was awarded the Communicator of the Year Award by the Public Relations Institute of Australia.
Anne Sargeant’s skill and leadership were publicly recognised, first as an inductee of Australia’s Sporting Hall of Fame and later when she was awarded an Order of Australia in 1988. In 2003, Anne was named Sydney’s Greatest Ever Netballer.
In 1998, Sydney Ferries named their new HarbourCat, The Anne Sargeant HarbourCat in recognition of Anne’s unparalleled sporting achievements. This was the first time a sportswoman from a team sport had be recognised in this way.
On television, Anne Sargeant was the host of Look Who’s Talking for Channel 9 (1992), the Prime Ministerial Women and Sports Awards (1995-96), the ABC Sports Awards, and the Optus Netball Programme. She has also appeared on numerous programmes including Midday, Today, Good Morning Australia, Wide World of Sport, and Bourke’s Backyard
On radio Anne Sargeant has been a guest host on 2BL, and has reported for numerous stations including 2GB, 2UE, 2MMM and 2KY. She was a regular columnist for the Daily Telegraph/Mirror for nearly a decade from 1990 to 2000 and has been featured in numerous magazines.
Anne Sargeant has served on the Board of Directors for the Australian Hall of Fame (2000), and was a board member of McDonald’s from 1992 to 1996. She was a member of the NSW Australia Day Council (1992-94) and has been an Australia Day Ambassador since 1990. She has served on the Australian Sports Commission (1992-95), was Tourism/Sport Ambassador for the Australian Tourist Commission(1993) and was part of the Sports Minister’s Sportswomen of Excellence Committee (1990/91).
